The short version
- A match grants a tier based on status you already hold; a challenge makes you earn part of a year's target in a short window to keep it.
- Delta's match lasts 90 days; keeping Gold needs $2,500 in MQDs from Delta flights in that time.
- United gives 120 days of status after an activating flight, then asks for flights plus PQP to keep it.
- American's challenge doesn't require outside status but is usually paid and runs in four-month phases.
- Most programs lock you out for several years after a match, so time it for a busy travel stretch.
A status match gives you a competitor's elite tier, usually on a trial basis, based on status you already hold. A status challenge is the trial itself: you get the tier up front and keep it only if you hit a reduced qualifying target within a short window. At the time of writing, Delta, United and American all run some version, but the rules, costs and eligibility differ enough that you should read the terms before you click enroll.
Here's how they work, how to request one, and the checks that keep you from wasting a once-in-years opportunity.
Match versus challenge
The two terms get used loosely, so it helps to separate them.
- Status match: the airline grants a tier equivalent to the one you hold elsewhere. You prove your status, they match it.
- Status challenge: the airline grants a tier for a limited time and asks you to earn a fraction of the normal annual requirement in that window to keep it longer.
In practice, the big US programs combine the two. You match first, then you face a challenge to keep the status beyond the trial.
How the three US programs handle it
Delta: Medallion Status Match Challenge
Delta matches elite members of a listed set of airlines to Silver, Gold or Platinum Medallion for 90 days, free. To keep the status past 90 days, you earn MQDs from Delta flights during that period:
| Matched tier | MQDs needed in 90 days |
|---|---|
| Silver Medallion | $1,250 |
| Gold Medallion | $2,500 |
| Platinum Medallion | $3,750 |
Members who enroll in 2026 and complete the challenge keep status through January 31, 2028.
Eligibility is strict. You must not have matched, enrolled in or earned Medallion status through a status match, promotional offer or complimentary status at any time in 2023 through 2026. Your current status must have been earned through the other airline's published requirements, not a promotion or a gift. You need to have been a SkyMiles member for at least 30 days, and to have flown at least one Delta-marketed flight above Main Basic in the past three years. Delta asks for proof of your status and a statement showing the activity that earned it. Review can take up to 15 business days.
United: Premier status match
United matches eligible members of competing programs to a Premier tier. You apply through the status match page on united.com, signed in to MileagePlus, with proof of your current status showing your name, tier, membership number, program and expiration date. Responses can take up to 14 business days.
Once approved, you have 90 days to take an activating flight on United or United Express. The matched status then runs for 120 days, and keeping it longer requires, at the time of writing:
| Matched tier | Flights + PQP to keep it |
|---|---|
| Premier Silver | 5 PQF + 1,700 PQP |
| Premier Gold | 10 PQF + 3,400 PQP |
| Premier Platinum | 15 PQF + 5,000 PQP |
| Premier 1K | 20 PQF + 7,500 PQP |
Members who completed a match or status exception in the past five years are not eligible. United has also announced that PQFs stop counting for regular qualification from January 1, 2027, so expect the challenge terms to change too. Check the current page before applying.
American: status challenge
American's version works differently. You don't need status elsewhere at all. You request a challenge, usually by calling AAdvantage, and receive the tier immediately. The challenge runs in consecutive four-month phases; you must earn a set number of Loyalty Points in each phase to carry the status into the next, up to a full year.
American doesn't publish the price, and offers vary by member. Reports put recent per-phase targets at roughly a third of the annual requirement, but published figures differ between sources, so ask for the exact numbers before you pay. Payments are reported as non-refundable, and you can't currently hold status from a previous AAdvantage challenge.
How to request a status match, step by step
- Confirm your current status is earned. Most programs reject trial, promotional or gifted status.
- Check the lockout history. Delta looks back to 2023; United looks back five years. If you used a match recently, you're probably out.
- Join the target program early. Delta requires at least 30 days of membership before you enroll.
- Gather proof. Screenshots of your app or account page showing your name, tier and expiration date, plus a statement of the activity that earned it, cover most requirements.
- Book the trips first. Delta's 90-day clock starts within 24 hours of the confirmation email. United gives you 90 days to fly an activating flight, then 120 days of status. Have flights lined up before you submit.
- Submit and wait. Expect up to two to three weeks for a decision.
- Track your progress. Log in weekly to confirm flights are posting toward the challenge target.
What to check before you apply
Your timing
A match is usually a one-shot opportunity for several years. Use it when you actually have a run of paid travel coming, such as a new job with weekly trips or a relocation to a new hub. Delta's 2026 enrollees keep status through January 31, 2028 regardless of when they enroll, which makes a late-2026 match with travel packed into the 90 days unusually good value.
Your route map
Status is only worth having on an airline you'll actually fly. Check which airline dominates your home airport and the routes you fly most. A match into a carrier that needs a connection for every trip rarely sticks.
Whether the target is realistic
Do the math on fares you'd actually buy. At Delta, the Gold challenge needs $2,500 in MQDs in 90 days. Basic Economy fares earn nothing toward that, so price the fare class you need, not the cheapest one.
What you give up
While you chase the challenge, you aren't crediting flights to your old program. If you're near a threshold there, the switch could cost you the status you already have.
Alliance knock-on effects
A match into Delta Gold gives you SkyTeam Elite Plus; a match into United Gold gives you Star Alliance Gold. That can open partner lounges on international trips, which is part of the value. See airline alliances explained for how that recognition works.
Common reasons requests get denied
- The status you're matching was itself from a match, promotion or gift.
- You matched with the same program within the lockout window.
- Your proof didn't show your name, tier or expiration date clearly.
- Your account is too new, or (at Delta) you haven't flown a qualifying Delta flight in three years.
Bottom line
Status matches and challenges are a cheap way to test a new airline, but they are usually once-in-several-years offers with tight windows. Line up real, paid travel before you enroll, confirm the lockout rules and exact targets on the airline's site, and pick the program that actually serves your home airport. Questions travelers ask
Can I status match more than once?
Usually not often. Delta excludes members who matched or held promotional Medallion status in 2023 through 2026, and United excludes members who matched in the past five years, at the time of writing.
Do status matches cost money?
Delta's and United's matches are free based on their published pages and coverage at the time of writing. American's challenge is typically paid, with the price depending on your history and the tier you want.
What proof do airlines want?
A screenshot or document showing your name, current tier and expiration date. Delta also asks for a statement showing the activity that earned your status.
