The short version

  • Since April 2, 2026, general members earn 3 miles per dollar on regular fares and nothing on Basic Economy.
  • United has no award chart; Saver awards are the lower, capacity-controlled price.
  • From January 1, 2027, Premier status will be based on PQP only, with 1K rising to 32,000 PQP.
  • Award changes and cancellations carry no fee, and miles don't expire.

United MileagePlus prices awards dynamically and has no current award chart, but its Star Alliance partners and its no-fee award changes keep it one of the more flexible US programs. Earning from flying changed on April 2, 2026, and Premier status rules change again on January 1, 2027, so this is a good moment to re-learn the program.

Here's what you need to know at the time of writing, October 23, 2026. Check united.com before you book, since United adjusts prices and rules without much notice.

How you earn MileagePlus miles

Flying United

Since April 2, 2026, United awards miles on the eligible fare, which it defines as the base fare plus carrier surcharges, excluding government taxes. The base rates without any add-ons are:

StatusRegular fares (miles per $1)Basic Economy (miles per $1)
General member30
Premier Silver52
Premier Gold63
Premier Platinum74
Premier 1K96

The headline: a general member buying Basic Economy now earns no miles at all. If you don't hold status, the extra cost of a standard economy fare also buys you miles.

Flying partners

You can credit flights on Star Alliance airlines and United's other partners to MileagePlus. Partner earning generally depends on the operating airline and fare class, and some discounted fares earn little or nothing. Check the partner's earning terms on united.com before you credit a flight.

JetBlue and Blue Sky

United and JetBlue now run a partnership called Blue Sky. MileagePlus members have been able to redeem miles on most eligible JetBlue flights since October 23, 2025, and reciprocal elite benefits began rolling out in May 2026. Since February 2026, you can also buy flights on either airline through the other's website and app.

Other ways to earn

MileagePlus also runs its own shopping portal, dining program and hotel and car rental partnerships. Earning rates vary by partner and promotion, so check the current offer inside your account. For a primer on how these programs work, see our guide to how airline miles work.

How award pricing works

United publishes no award chart. Prices on United flights are dynamic and can change between searches. There are two broad levels to watch for:

  • Saver awards: a lower, capacity-controlled price. Saver space isn't guaranteed on any route or date.
  • Everything else: prices that float with demand and can climb very high.

Premier members can sometimes see extra Saver inventory, so the price you're shown may differ from what another member sees.

Partner awards

Partner seats are released by the operating airline, but United decides the mileage price, and it isn't fixed either. Observed one-way business class examples from August 2026 show the range:

RouteBusiness class price seen
Newark to London Heathrow80,000 to 395,000
San Francisco to Tokyo Haneda110,000 (nonstop on ANA) and up
Melbourne to Singapore90,000 (on Singapore Airlines)
Boston to Paris88,000 and up (partner business, with a connection)

Those numbers are observations, not a chart. The pattern that matters: when a United flight sits at a dynamic peak, a partner routing in the same cabin is often much cheaper. Our award charts vs dynamic pricing explainer goes into why.

Key partners and alliance

United is a Star Alliance member. The alliance listed 25 members as of August 2026. Major members include Air Canada, Air New Zealand, ANA, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, SWISS and Turkish Airlines.

United also has partners outside the alliance, including Aer Lingus, Azul, Emirates, JetBlue, ITA Airways and Virgin Australia. Earning and redemption rules vary by partner, and earning on a partner doesn't guarantee you can redeem on it. For background, read our airline alliances explainer.

Premier status

For 2026 qualification (status in 2027)

United qualifies status with Premier Qualifying Points (PQP), based on spend, and Premier Qualifying Flights (PQF). For the 2026 calendar year, you need either combination below, plus a minimum of four flights on United or United Express:

TierPQP + PQFOr PQP only
Premier Silver5,000 + 156,000
Premier Gold10,000 + 3012,000
Premier Platinum15,000 + 4518,000
Premier 1K22,000 + 6028,000

What changes on January 1, 2027

United has announced that, starting January 1, 2027, Premier status will be based only on PQP. Flight counts will no longer qualify you. The reported 2027 thresholds are 6,000 PQP for Silver, 12,000 for Gold, 18,000 for Platinum and 32,000 for 1K, up from 28,000. You'll still need four flights operated by United or United Express during the year.

For most travelers below 1K, this changes little, since the PQP-only levels match the current ones. Short-haul commuters who reached status on flight counts lose that route.

Upgrades

Since February 1, 2026, all Premier members can use PlusPoints and complimentary upgrades on award tickets. From February 2027, United is replacing its fixed PlusPoints upgrade chart with demand-based pricing.

Fees and quirks

  • No-fee award changes: United doesn't charge fees to change or cancel award tickets. No-shows and partly flown trips can be treated differently.
  • Taxes: awards still carry taxes and fees, such as $5.60 one-way on a US domestic award. International trips can cost much more, and United doesn't promise to waive every carrier-imposed surcharge, so check the final total.
  • Excursionist Perk is gone: the free stopover on international round-trip and multi-city awards ended for new tickets on August 21, 2025.
  • Expiration: MileagePlus miles don't expire while your account stays open and in good standing.
  • Prices move: United's own terms say award pricing can change without notice. If you see a good price, book it. The no-fee cancellation gives you a safety net.

Sweet spots

United doesn't have fixed bargains, so think in patterns:

  1. Saver space on long-haul United flights, which can price far below the dynamic rate on the same route.
  2. Star Alliance business class when United's own flights are expensive, such as ANA to Japan or Singapore Airlines between Australia and Singapore.
  3. Speculative bookings. Free changes and cancellations mean you can lock in a good price early and cancel if plans change.
  4. JetBlue redemptions through Blue Sky, which add more domestic options to search.

Compare any redemption against the cash fare with our award value calculator.

Bottom line

MileagePlus is flexible to redeem, with no-fee changes, miles that don't expire and a large Star Alliance network. But since April 2, 2026, general members earn less from flying and nothing on Basic Economy. If you're working toward status, plan around the PQP-only rules that start January 1, 2027, and check united.com before booking.
