The short version

  • oneworld has 15 member airlines at the time of writing; Philippine Airlines is listed as a future member.
  • American and Alaska (with Hawaiian, under Atmos Rewards) are the two US members.
  • Lounge access starts at the Sapphire tier; Emerald adds first class lounges and fast-track security.
  • AAdvantage needs Platinum Pro for Emerald, while Atmos Rewards gets you there at Platinum.
  • For awards, start with AAdvantage, compare Atmos Rewards, and check Avios through Qatar or Iberia.

oneworld has 15 member airlines at the time of writing, with Philippine Airlines lined up as the 16th. For US travelers it's the alliance of American Airlines and Alaska Airlines, which means two strong US programs for earning status and two very different ways to book awards on partners like Japan Airlines, Qatar Airways and Cathay Pacific.

This guide covers the current members as of October 23, 2026, what the three oneworld tiers get you, and which programs make the most sense for booking oneworld award flights. If you're new to alliances, our airline alliances explainer covers the basics first.

Recent changes to know about

Philippine Airlines is the next to join. oneworld announced on June 6, 2026 that Philippine Airlines will become its 16th member, and the airline's page now shows it as a "Future Member." No joining date had been published at the time of writing. Once it joins, its Mabuhay Miles members will be able to earn and redeem across the alliance, and oneworld will add destinations such as Caticlan and Puerto Princesa.

Hawaiian now sits under Alaska. oneworld lists Alaska and Hawaiian together as Alaska Air Group, and their shared program is Atmos Rewards.

Fiji Airways and Oman Air are full members. Fiji Airways doesn't run a separate program: it uses American's AAdvantage as its frequent flyer program. Oman Air is listed with its Sindbad program.

Emerald, Sapphire and Ruby: what each gets you

oneworld has three status tiers: Emerald at the top, Ruby at the entry level, and Sapphire between them. You never earn them directly. You earn status in a member airline's program and oneworld recognizes it automatically, as explained on its benefits page.

The extra baggage rules are specific. On piece-system itineraries, Emerald members get one extra bag free on top of the ticketed allowance, or 20 kg extra on weight-system itineraries. Middle-tier members get 15 kg extra on weight-system itineraries, or one extra bag of up to 23 kg on international piece-system trips. oneworld notes that "exceptions apply" on lounge access, so check the operating airline's rules before you count on a specific lounge.

Ruby is mostly about convenience, not comfort. Lounge access starts at Sapphire, and that's where oneworld status starts to change how your trip feels.

How US programs map to oneworld tiers

These are the mappings oneworld publishes for the two US member programs.

Note the difference. AAdvantage needs Platinum Pro for Emerald, while Atmos Rewards gets you there at Platinum, according to the American Airlines and Alaska Air Group member pages. Qualification rules change, so check each airline's site for current requirements.

Best programs for booking oneworld awards

You can redeem miles from any member program on any member airline, and oneworld says you book through your airline's own site. In practice, a few programs do most of the heavy lifting for US travelers. This summary draws on AwardFares' oneworld program comparison, which was last updated in October 2025, so check current charts before booking.

American AAdvantage

For most US flyers, AAdvantage is the first program to check. You can earn it flying American, Alaska and the rest of oneworld, as well as through American's hotel, car rental, shopping portal and dining partners. AwardFares singles it out for premium-cabin value on Qatar's Qsuite, JAL and Cathay Pacific, and notes it avoids passing on high fees for most partner awards. American's own flights are dynamically priced, so compare before you book. Our guide to award charts vs dynamic pricing explains why that matters.

Alaska Atmos Rewards

Atmos Rewards uses distance-based award charts for its own and partner flights, and AwardFares lists a free stopover on one-way international awards. That makes it a strong second option, especially for trips across the Pacific where you'd like a few days in Tokyo or Hong Kong on the way.

Avios: British Airways, Iberia and Qatar

Avios is shared across several programs. AwardFares says you can move Avios between British Airways, Iberia, Qatar Airways and Finnair, usually at 1:1. The point is that the same flight can carry very different fees depending on which program books it.

British Airways adds high carrier-imposed surcharges on long-haul awards, especially in premium cabins. Its strength is short-haul flights. Qatar Privilege Club is the direct route to Qsuite awards. In AwardFares' Madrid to Doha example, the estimate was about 43,000 Avios and €160 in fees through Qatar, about 42,500 Avios and €180 through Iberia, and about 50,000 Avios and €380 through British Airways.

Cathay and JAL

Both use distance-based charts. Asia Miles is known for round-the-world awards with up to five stopovers. JAL's program is known for generous stopover and open-jaw rules. Both are worth a look for complex trips, but most US travelers will find AAdvantage or Atmos Rewards simpler.

How to book a oneworld award

  1. Search for availability on aa.com or alaskaair.com. Both include partner flights in their award search.
  2. Note the exact flights and cabin that show as available.
  3. Price the same itinerary in AAdvantage, Atmos Rewards and one Avios program.
  4. Compare the total cost, miles plus taxes and fees.
  5. Move or buy miles only after you've confirmed space, since most transfers are final.

Our award value calculator helps you see whether the miles-to-fees trade is a good one.

Bottom line

oneworld has 15 members today, with Philippine Airlines set to become the 16th. Ruby is a small perk; lounges start at the Sapphire tier and Emerald adds first class lounges and fast-track security. For awards, US travelers should start with AAdvantage, compare Atmos Rewards, and use Avios through Qatar or Iberia when British Airways' fees are too high.

We check program rules against official airline sources, but award prices and partner rules change often. Confirm the details with the airline before you book. Read our editorial policy and advertiser disclosure.
